BTS (방탄소년단) Biography (Who is BTS?; Bangtan Sonyeondan Biography):

BTS (Korean: 방탄소년단; Bangtan Sonyeondan), also known as the Bangtan Boys, is a seven-member South Korean boy band that began formation in 2010 and debuted in 2013 under HYBE Labels formerly known as Big Hit Entertainment.

Formed by producer Bang Si Hyuk, the septet’s lineup includes RM (Kim Namjoon), team leader and rapper; Jin (Kim Seokjin), singer; Suga (Min Yoongi), rapper; J-Hope (Jung Hoseok), rapper and choreographer; Jimin (Jimin Park), singer and choreographer; V (Kim Taehyung), singer; and Jungkook (Jungkook Jeon), singer, rapper, and choreographer.

Most of the songs are composed and produced by BTS as well as write their own lyrics. Their lyrics, often focused on personal and social commentary, touch on the themes of mental health, troubles of school-age youth and coming-of-age, loss, the journey towards loving oneself, and individualism.

After debuting in 2013 with their single album 2 Cool 4 Skool, BTS released their first Korean-language studio album, Dark & Wild featuring the single “Danger“, and Japanese-language studio album, Wake Up, in 2014. As their fan base grew and international tours sold out, they released The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 1 in April 2015, and the follow-up, Pt. 2, some months later in November.

They embarked on a massive world tour as The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 2 topped a record-setting six international music charts, including Billboard’s World Albums chart. They won several New Artist of the Year awards for the track “No More Dream“, including at the 2013 Melon Music Awards and Golden Disc Awards and the 2014 Seoul Music Awards.

Their second full Korean studio album, Wings (2016), peaked at #26 on the Billboard 200, which marked the highest chart ranking for a K-pop album ever. They also became the first K-pop act to spend four weeks on the charts. It sold more than 1.5 million copies, making it BTS’s first “million-seller. “

Love Yourself: Her (2017), debuted at #7 on the Billboard 200, which is the highest rank for an Asian artist in history, as well as BTS, became the first Korean group to receive a certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for their single “Mic Drop.” Their third full album, Love Yourself: Tear (2018), debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, making them the only K-Pop act to achieve this feat so far.

BTS also became the fastest group since the Beatles to earn four US number-one albums, doing so in less than two years. Love Yourself: Answer (2018) was also debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200. On November 9, 2018 “Love Yourself: Answer” became the first Korean album to be certified Gold (500,000+ units), and BTS became the first Korean group to get a Platinum (1,000,000+ units) certification with the single “MIC Drop” in the United States. The compilation featured a handful of new tracks, including lead single “Idol,” packaged with previously released songs from Her and Tear, as well as some remixes and a Nicki Minaj-assisted version of “Idol.”

On June 28, “Butter” became the group’s longest-running #1 debut in Hot 100 history, breaking the 23-year record held by Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” (1998). Meanwhile, on July 9, they released their third English-language single, “Permission to Dance” and on July 19, it became their fifth consecutive No. 1 on the Hot 100 chart in 10 months and two weeks, making it the fastest accumulation of a quintet of leaders since Michael Jackson more than three decades ago.

Having sold over 20 million albums on the Gaon Music Chart, BTS is the best-selling artist in South Korean history and holds the best-selling album in South Korea with Map of the Soul: 7. They are the first and only Asian and non-English speaking act to be named the IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year (2020) and to chart on Billboard’s Top Touring Artists of the 2010s (placing at number 45). During their Love Yourself World Tour, BTS became the first Asian and first non-English speaking act to headline and sell out both Wembley Stadium and Rose Bowl Stadium.

BTS received numerous accolades for their work, including 6 American Music Awards, 9 Billboard Music Awards, and 24 Golden Disk Awards, and nominations for a Grammy Award and a Brit Award. Also, featured on Time’s international cover as “Next Generation Leaders.”

BTS Music Career:

BTS began its formation in 2010 after Big Hit Entertainment CEO Bang Si-hyuk (AKA “Hitman” Bang is a South Korean lyricist, composer, producer, and record executive) met with group leader RM and was impressed with his rapping.

BTS was debuted in 2011 and featured on several tracks by artists such as 2AM and Lee Seung-gi before their debut was postponed and the group was reorganized into a more traditional idol group. The lineup was then finalized with Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook in 2012. Six months prior to their debut, they began to gain attention for their presence on various social media websites, as well as song covers on YouTube and SoundCloud.

Before debuting in 2013, RM was already performing as an underground rapper and had released several tracks informally, including a collaboration with Zico. Jin had been a student at Konkuk University, majoring in acting, before being street cast for auditions, while Suga was an underground rapper in Daegu. J-Hope, who was part of a street dance team named Neuron, was active in the underground dancing scene, participating in various battles and competitions.

Before joining Big Hit, Jimin entered Busan High School of Arts as the top student in modern dance but later transferred to Korea Arts High School with V, who auditioned in Daegu. Jungkook was cast by multiple agencies after leaving auditions for Superstar K, but eventually chose Big Hit after seeing Rap Monster’s rap. On June 12, 2013, BTS released their debut single album 2 Cool 4 Skool, the first installment of their “school trilogy” series, simultaneously with its lead single “No More Dream” which peaked at number 124 in Korea.

While the album peaked at number five in South Korea and eventually sold over 145,000 copies and sold over 145,000 copies, “No More Dream” and the subsequent single “We Are Bulletproof Pt.2” were not major hits. Expanding their endeavours to Japan, “No More Dream” was later re-recorded in Japanese and released in June 2014. During the production of the album, Suga and RM rewrote the lyrics of “No More Dream” more than 20 times.

The second part to the “school trilogy” was the extended play O!RUL8,2?, along with its single “N.O,” released on September 11, 2013. The EP peaked at number four in Korea and has sold over 160,000 copies by 2018. Its supporting singles “N.O” and “Attack on Bangtan” failed to chart high. At the end of the year, BTS has recognized with several New Artist of the Year awards, including the 5th Melon Music Awards, 28th Golden Disc Awards, and the 23rd Seoul Music Awards.

BTS Name:

The group’s name, BTS, stands for the Korean expression Bangtan Sonyeondan (Korean: 방탄소년단; Hanja: 防彈少年團) (Also known as Bangtan Boys; Bangtan Sonyeondan; Beyond the Scene; Bulletproof Boy Scouts), actual meaning “Bulletproof Boy Scouts”. According to member J-Hope, the name signifies the group’s desire “to block out stereotypes, criticisms, and expectations that aim at adolescents like bullets”.
