Lionel Messi’s Childhood Picture

Lionel Messi was born on 24 June 1987 in Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina. He is the third of four children of Jorge Messi, a steel factory manager, and his wife Celia Cuccittini, who worked in a magnet manufacturing workshop. He has three siblings, two elder brothers Rodrigo and Matias, and a sister, Maria Sol.

Messi has grown up in a tight-knit, football-loving family and developed a passion for the sport from an early age, playing constantly with his older brothers, Rodrigo and Matías, and his cousins, Maximiliano and Emanuel Biancucchi, both of whom became professional footballers.

At the age of four, he joined the local club Grandoli, coached by his father, though his earliest influence as a player came from his maternal grandmother, Celia, who accompanied him to training and matches. He was greatly affected by her death, because of that, he has celebrated his goals by looking up and pointing to the sky in tribute to his grandmother.

A lifelong supporter of Newell’s Old Boys, Messi joined the Rosario club when he was six years old and played for Newell’s, he scored almost 500 goals as a member of “The Machine of ’87”.

Unfortunately, his future as a professional player was threatened when, at age 10, he was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency (GHD is a medical condition resulting from not enough growth hormone). His family and Newell’s Old Boys couldn’t manage his treatment cost.

The sporting director of FC Barcelona Charly Rexach, with no other paper at hand, offered a contract on a paper napkin. He promised to offer help to Messi by paying for his medical bills only if the latter moved to Spain. Messi enrolled at Barcelona’s youth academy, La Masia, at age 13.

  • While hat-tricks and quadruples had become common for Messi, history was created when he scored five goals in a match against Bayer Leverkusen, which Barcelona won by 7-1. With this, he became the first player to score five goals in a UEFA Champions League match.
  • The same year he finished the season as league top scorer in Spain and Europe for a second time, with 50 goals, a La Liga record, while his 73 goals in all competitions surpassed Gerd Müller’s 67 goals in the 1972–73 Bundesliga season, making him the single-season top scorer in the history of European club football.

Lionel Messi Leaves Barcelona:

This was the hardest moment for Lionel Messi as well as Barcelona FC to leave Barcelona FC. All this happens because of financial shortage and many others reasons. On 26 August, Barcelona’s sporting director Ramon Planes iterated the club’s desire to “build a team around the most important player in the world” and affirmed Messi will only be able to leave should a buyer pay his €700 million buyout clause.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta explains the reason behind Messi’s departure. “Leo wanted to stay and the club wanted him to stay but with the La Liga rules, it has not been possible. To comply with the league’s fair play regulations we had to accept an agreement that mortgaged the Club’s TV right for half a century and FC Barcelona is above everything else.”
